Businesses and the economy are central to our modern capitalist society. In Business Studies we aim to give students an overview of how a Business is managed, structured and financed. We also study a variety of business models as well as small, medium and large businesses both locally and at an international level. It is a subject that links together so many aspects of their day to day experiences and helps them to understand some of the potential difficulties we face in the future. We use contemporary examples - anything over twenty years old is considered to be history and a wide range of learning activities are used including mysteries, investigations, presentations, group work to mention just a few.

- Year 10
Unit 1: Introduction to Small Business
Focus on small businesses and traces the whole process through:
- idea - customer needs, enterprise, research
- set up - planning, finance, staff, marketing, ownership
- running - problems, external influences, law, tax, the economy
- Year 11
Covers some of the more traditional features of a business studies course and takes the basic principles covered in Unit 1 and extends them.
There is the opportunity to be able to base work on medium to large sized businesses in this unit. Some of the more theoretical aspects of business studies are introduced, for example product life cycles, the Boston Matrix, JIT, branding, break-even and so on.
The emphasis of the teaching should be on helping students to be able to think in business ways – to recognise problems, to identify potential solutions, to be able to see the costs and benefits of different solutions and to make judgements about which option to follow and to be able to offer support for these judgements. There is not a right or a wrong way of dealing with any business issue or problem – as is the case in real life business – and this is how students should be encouraged to think. If they can justify, in business terms, why they have chosen a particular option then that is the skill we are looking to develop.

From September the Year 12 students will start a new exam board specification with Edexcel. The main areas of content covered in the AS year will consist of:
- Human Resources
- Finance & Accounting
- Operations management
- External influences
- Entrepreneurs and leadership
This will be assessed through papers 1 and 2 both worth 50% of the overall AS qualification.
If a full A level is undertaken then additional topics will be:
- Business decisions and strategy
- Global Business
This will be assessed through papers 1, 2 and 3 all of which will be sat at the end of Year 13 and each paper will be worth 33.3% of the overall A level grade.
BTEC L3 Business
The BTEC L3 National Extended Diploma in Business is a two-year, full-time course. The course is equivalent in size to three A levels. It will give students an extensive business background covering a variety of business functions including finance, marketing, event management and the principal of management.
The course will allow students to pursue higher education courses in a variety of business disciplines. It will also support their ambitions if they wish to progress directly to employment or higher apprenticeships.
Students will be assessed via a combination of internally (58%) and externally (42%) assessed units where points will be given depending on unit achievement. Overall points determine grade on completion of the course.

Economics B is divided into four areas and has three externally examined papers. Students develop their knowledge of microeconomic and macroeconomic concepts by investigating theory and real-world businesses. Deeper understanding and application of more complex concepts are developed in year 2 of the course. The four main areas covered are:

- The wider economic environment
- The global economy
- Making markets work
Students will learn to apply their knowledge and understanding to both seen and unseen case studies; and be aware of current economic issues.
