On Thursday 12th October, 2017, ten budding young chefs from Year 7 to Year 10, headed eagerly towards our Food Technology classrooms, after school, to take part in Springboard's FutureChef 2018 competition...
Springboard's FutureChef helps young people aged 12-16 to learn to cook. It inspires them to explore food and cooking as a life skill by developing their culinary talent and informing them about entry routes into the hospitality industry.
For the school heat, each student, ranging from Year 7 to Year 10, competed against each other to make a meal for two people costing less than £5.
There was fierce competition this year, from students making their own pitta breads and samosas, to making their own pies and burgers. All students made their dishes within one hour and each dish had to be plated up to restaurant standard. All participants did exceptionally well and completed their dishes independently.
The judges; Mr Pickles and Mrs Milowiz, thoroughly enjoyed every dish and found it very tough to come up with just two winners. However, we are delighted to say that the two winners were Leigh Speight and Daniel Hale, with their Moroccan inspired chicken couscous and Leigh's salmon with butternut squash puree and jus were outstanding.
We all wish them the best of luck for the local final at Sheffield Hallam University in January.
